Why am I being asked to pay for an article?

Answer

You shouldn't have to log in or pay to get articles you find in library databases. The library doesn't always have immediate access to the full text of articles you might discover when you do a search. When you find an article but don't see the option to get to the full-text, click the UC-eLinks button in the article record. This will take you to a page where you can Request the article through Interlibrary Loan by entering your UCMnetID (dsmith) and email (dsmith@ucmerced.edu). Articles are free and are most often delivered electronically in 3-5 business days.

The same is true for articles found in google scholar. If the full text of the article is not immediately available, click on the "More" link and you will see an icon for Get it at UC or UC e-Links.

Remember that this process only works when you are doing your research on campus, or using the VPN to connect to the campus network from off campus.
